Cherasco
The Visconti castle (14th century), Palazzo Salmatoris (1620), the synagogue (18th century), the Arco del Belvedere (1647), church Sant´Agostino (1672), church San Pietro (12th -13th centuries), church San Martino (13th-14th centuries) and the pilgrimage church Madonna del Popolo are worth seeing. Palazzo Salmatoris is an important historic building, since it was here that the armistice between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Kingdom of Savoy in 1796 was signed (that was the so called “Pace di Cherasco”, peace of Cherasco, and then the building is also called “Palazzo della Pace”, the Palace of Peace). Furthermore, that palace hosted the Holy Shroud in 1706.
Cherasco is a municipality of about 8,000 inhabitants, in the province of Cuneo. The town was founded in 1243 by an imperial vicar of Frederick II of Swabia. Throughout the centuries it has been governed by the Visconti family, by the Savoy and by Napoleon Bonaparte.
