Monterosso al Mare is one of the five villages forming Cinque Terre. It was already inhabited in the Stone Age, and the Romans came and fortified it and settled there. Due to its proximity to the coast it repeatedly fell victim to pirate attacks. Monterosso al Mare was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997, like the other villages in Cinque Terre.
Monterosso al Mare belongs to the Cinque Terre municipality and is a locality in La Spezia province which lies in the Liguria region. Near Monterosso la Mare are several other villages like: Levanto (11.8 km), Memola (19.6 km) and Fontona (10.3 km). From Genoa take the A12/E80 towards Strada Statale 566 Dir/SS566dir near Carrodano. Take the exit towards Carrodano/Levanto da A12/E80. Follow Strada Statale 566 Dir/SS566dir, Località Alberod'Oro and Strada Provinciale 38/SP38 towards Via Roma a Monterosso al Mare.
