Alba

Alba is the largest town in the Langhe, a landscape that contains many woodlands and streams and extends southwards as far as the Maritime Alps.

Alba itself is a well-guarded secret of connoisseurs. The 'Fiera Internazionale del Tartufo' - Italy's most important truffle fair –is held here every year. Another and rather different event takes place at the same time - the 'Paglio degli Asini' (donkey races).

Alba is also famous for its chocolate and hazelnut specialities. You must have heard the name Ferrero. The company is based in Alba.

In the centre of the old town lies the beautiful Piazza Risorgimento, where a busy Saturday market has been held since the year 1171. After you have made your purchases, you can relax over a delicious espresso in one of the traditional old coffee houses such as the Antico Caffè Calissano.

Alba used to be known as the 'City of a Hundred Towers'. The title refers to the numerous towers built by noble families in the old town. Two of the most beautiful buildings are situated in Piazza Duomo: the Palazzo Comunale (town hall), which houses a picture by the artist Macrino d’Alba, and the Duomo San Lorenzo (Sat-Sun 07.00 – 12.00, 15.00 – 19.00, Fri 15.00 – 19.00), which dates back to the romanesque and gothic periods.

Concerts and short theatre performances are held in the nearby mendicant church of San Domenico.
