The grotte dei Balzi Rossi

Shortly before the French border, just below the town of Grimaldi, you will find one of the most important excavation sites in Europe, the grottos of Balzi Rossi. The 20,000 year old skeletons and artifacts led to a spectacular discovery: two skeletons from the “Grotta die Fanciulli“ exhibit distinctly non-neolithic features and thus vary greatly from the only known Cro-Magnon type. Due to this discovery we can say with great certainty that there were multiple human species of humans that must have died out in Europe since that time.

A part of the excavation is available to see in the Museo Nazionale Preistorico dei Balzi Rossi which was founded by Thomas Hanbury in 1898. Included in the price (2 € for adults and 1 € for children/students) is a visit into the grottos. From the entrance to the grottos is a wonderful view of the French border town of Menton.
